Reminder to pay your membership fees

This is a friendly reminder to pay your membership fees for the SAAFECS 2023 academic year.
Membership fees are R300 per year.  If, however, you attended the conference in 2022, your membership fees were included for 2022 and 2023.
We are planning to host a series of webinars for the remainder of the year, and if you are a member, it will be free to you!
What is your money being used for?  The SAAFECS membership fees go towards student bursaries amongst other things, and your fees will then be contributing towards making a student’s tertiary education a possibility.

What does SAAFECS offer its Members?

The following persons are eligible for the respective groups of membership:

An active community of Consumer Scientists.

Networking opportunities.

Informative sessions of learning and sharing of knowledge, skills and expertise.

New ideas and developments in Consumer Sciences.

Support for Consumer Studies educators.

Web based information to be accessed wherever you are.

Links to industry and related fields.

Latest research that is applicable to Consumer Science.

Sources of information for students, researchers, educators and community developers.

Biannual conference (with special registration rates for members).

Member Application Forms


Eligibility of Members

The following persons are eligible for the respective groups of membership:

Group A: Full Members

a) Persons with a recognized qualification in Consumer Science or any related discipline.
b) Persons who have an interest in the fields of Consumer Science, Consumer Studies and Home
Economics who may benefit from the interaction with these disciplines and related fields.
c) Postgraduate students earning a fixed income qualify as Full members.

Group B: Student Members

a) Any student following a recognized course in the fields specified in (a) at a recognized university, or
other relevant academic institution.
b) Any international student who is following a recognized course in the fields specified in (a) at a
recognized university or other relevant academic institution.
c) Any international or national student who has an interest in the field of Consumer Science and who
may benefit from the interaction within the different sub-disciplines of Consumer Science.
d) Postgraduate students who are fulltime students not earning a fixed income may qualify as Student

Group C: Honorary Members

Any person who has made a notable contribution to SAAFECS or to Consumer Sciences in general may,
after consideration of curriculum vitae by the Executive Committee and after acceptance by EXCO at the
Biennial General Meeting, be invited to become an Honorary Member of SAAFECS.

2024 Nutrition congress

Please see the Save the Date attached for the 2024 Nutrition Congress.

The congress will be held 2-4 October 2024 at the Elangeni Hotel, Durban.

2023 Nutrition congress

World Social Marketing 2023

The World Social Marketing Conference will be held in Johannesburg, 24-26 April 2023.

IFHE Publications

The International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) hosted the 2022 World Congress.  The theme related to the textile and design exhibition, and outputs were often connected to sustainable production practices and are published at the IFHE website.

Reflecting on World Home Economics Day 21st March 2019
Each March, beginning in 1982,members of the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE) celebrate World Home Economics Day to promote family and consumer issues. The 2019 theme, “Creativity and Innovation in Home Economics for Sustainable Development”, highlights our profession’s contribution to a sustainable future. Sustainable development begins at home.
